This brief excerpt is taken from Chapter Three - 'Be
Present'

Five.
Do you remember what it was like when you were
five?  You played outside all day.  You and your
friends had these amazing imaginations.  When
asked what you wanted to be or do when you
were older, you would always answer from a place
where you felt unlimited by the possibilities.

You breathed differently when you were five.
Everything was new and exciting and loveable.
There wasn’t anything to be afraid of.  There were
no judgments about your friends because
everyone was your friend.  You didn’t really
understand the concept of time – of yesterday or
tomorrow.  You really only understood today.
Today I will do this and today I will do that.
There weren’t any ‘some days’ or ‘what ifs’.  You
lived in the present when you were five.

What happened to you?  What changed your
outlook and your perspectives?  Who influenced
or dare I say conditioned you to feeling limited?
How did you go from feeling the world was full of
endless possibilities to feeling the world had
little to offer?  What happened along the way
that prevented you from becoming that ballet
dancer or astronaut or veterinarian or the
‘whatever’ it was you thought you could be when
you were five?

I’m through accepting limits, cause someone
says they’re so.  Some things I cannot change,
but ‘til I try I’ll never know.  (Defying Gravity -
from the musical ‘Wicked’ – Stephen Schwartz)
